We love a good chocolate—perhaps a little too much—so naturally, we made our way to @etatdechocmtl in search of the kind of high-quality cocoa magic that makes life worth living.
We walked out with an assortment of intriguing chocolate bars, the kind of flavour combinations that make you pause, raise an eyebrow, and then nod in impressed approval. Maple and miso? Corn and peppers? And yes, the creativity absolutely works.
We also grabbed some salted butter caramel and a bag of hot cocoa mix that looked promising—because who doesn’t love a cozy cup of molten comfort?
Every item, from the petite bars to the mix and caramel, was clearly small-batch, house-made, and crafted with an almost suspicious level of care. Truly delicious.
Now… about the prices. Let’s just say the name “État de Choc” doubles as a spoiler for your reaction at the register. The hot cocoa bag rings in at $22.50, and if you follow the directions, you’ll get two cups—two!—(if you use water, which we recommend, unless you enjoy drinking pudding). The adorable 25 g bars, which fit inside a medium-sized hand, are $8 each.
To be clear, we understand the craftsmanship, the quality, and the small-batch labor of love behind every item—and we truly enjoyed everything we tried. But unless we suddenly discover a golden ticket in our next bar, this will remain a very occasional indulgence.
