There are dessert shops, and then there is @sourbitesmtl — a place so aggressively saccharine it feels less like a pâtisserie and more like a high-fructose fever dream with a lease.

I cannot begin to describe how profoundly I loathe not only this establishment, but the very concept of it. It is an over-decorated, under-delivered, sugar-blasted spectacle — a kind of glittering garbage factory that assaults all five senses and then comes back for a sixth you didn’t know you had. Neon drips from every surface. Chocolate cascades with theatrical excess. Pistachios are flung about as though someone lost a bet. And yet, beneath the confetti and color, there is… nothing.

This is the archetype of the overhyped, overpriced, low-effort confectionery empire: deliberately loud, photogenic to a fault, engineered to attract rather than to nourish. It feels less like a bakery and more like a business model — obviously calibrated for maximum profit margins and minimum culinary integrity.

Everything here is trend-driven. The Dubai chocolate. The pistachio crêpe. The Kinder cheesecake. Each item arrives dressed for social media. And yet, in a remarkable feat of consistency, they all taste precisely the same: diabetes. Just a blunt-force avalanche of sugar deployed to mask the utter absence of flavour, texture, nuance, or craftsmanship.

High sugar content is not a personality. It is not depth. It is not taste. It is a smokescreen — one that clings to your teeth long after your optimism has dissolved.

What baffles me most is not the mediocrity, but the longevity. I genuinely do not understand how this place has lasted, let alone expanded. Perhaps we have collectively agreed that dessert is no longer about pleasure, but about performance.

I do not recommend this establishment under any circumstances — not for a treat, not for a celebration, not even for curiosity. Life is too short to waste it on this. Don’t listen those paid to promote this

I am less disappointed in the shop than I am in the collective lack of taste required to keep it thriving.
