@patisseriedurosaire – Are These Really the Best Natas in Town?
There’s no shortage of tempting treats at @patisseriedurosaire, but we came with a mission: to try their famed pastel de nata. These Portuguese custard tarts are the bakery’s signature item and, as we’d heard from multiple sources, they’ve even been voted the best in town. Naturally, we had to see if they lived up to the hype.
When we arrived, options were limited – only the classic and chocolate natas were left – but thankfully, they had just come out of the oven. Freshness wasn’t an issue.
As we bit into them, it made us reflect: What makes a pastel de nata great? And why are they so beloved? A perfect nata, in our minds, balances a delicately flaky shell with a silky, flavorful custard that feels both indulgent and light.
To be perfectly honest, though, while these were enjoyable, they didn’t quite hit that mark for us. The pastry was somewhat flaky, but veered towards rubbery in places. The custard was good – smooth and mildly sweet – but it didn’t leave a lasting impression.
We can’t say they were bad by any means, but we also can’t say they lived up to the reputation. We’ve had better elsewhere, and we’re still a bit puzzled by the “best in town” label.
For us, the search for the ultimate pastel de nata continues.
But if you’re curious and nearby, they’re worth a try – especially if you manage to catch them fresh. Let us know where your favourites are or what you think of these in the comments 👇
